How to Stay Energized at Work

Sometimes it’s hard to stay awake at work. You’ve been staring at your computer screen, reading the same sentence over and over again, but no information is getting processed by your brain. Is it time to go home yet? You check your watch, and it’s only 1:30 pm. Sound familiar?

It’s happened to the best of us. You’ve hit the wall, and your energy level is down way low. Here are some quick tips on how you can stay energized at work.

Get some fresh air

The easiest way to stay awake is to get some fresh air. A power walk is guaranteed to jump-start your brain every time. Step outside the office for at least a 10-minute walk, and get some oxygen flowing through that body. You’ll also be losing some extra calories at the same time – bonus!

Switch to another task

Could your brain be switching off because you’ve been doing the same, mundane task for the last 3 hours? If you’re finding yourself slowly snoozing off, try swapping things up. Give yourself a new job to do, preferably something more exciting than what you were working on before, and this will help to keep your level of productivity up.

Avoid big lunches

Think twice before munching down that butter chicken curry with rice and extra naan bread. A large-sized portioned lunch with lots of carbs is a sure way to drag your energy level right now. I know it’s hard to avoid delicious, carb-ilicious meals all the time. But if you know you’ve got an afternoon planned with writing a critical report or attending an important workshop, try opting for a light, healthy salad wrap for lunch instead. Also, don’t forget some extra vitamin C for that extra energy!

Socialize

Ask a colleague for a coffee date, have a quick Twitter chat (you can always have one with me @tinacypark), or call your mom to say you were thinking of her. Socializing is not only good for the soul, but it will boost your mood up as well.

Exercise

Contrary to your instincts, exercising will actually pump endorphins into your system and get your energy level shooting up again, as opposed to tiring you out. Start the day by going for a 20-minute jog and trust me when I say this will wake you up better than your strongest cup of coffee. If you’re not usually a morning person, squeeze in a quick run or visit to the gym during lunch time. Even the shortest exercise will be better than none. And again – losing extra calories – boom!

Have a good laugh

“I feel sleepy when I laugh,” said no one ever. When you’re giggling and laughing, I guarantee you would feel your energy level rise back up. Watch a funny YouTube video, find your colleague that’s guaranteed to crack the best jokes, or look up funny GIFs of goats. Do whatever that tickles your fancy to get you chuckling. Share the fun with your colleagues as well – it’ll be an easy way to sneak in some team bonding.

Listen to upbeat music

Tune into your favorite music and imagine yourself dancing away to the beats. Whether you’re into the Top 100, dance, rock, hip-hop, or Kpop – it doesn’t matter. If you don’t know which song or album to start with, just specify your mood with Spotify and let it do its magic.

Drink plenty of water

Most of our body content is made up of water. So when we’re dehydrated, we’re not functioning as well as we should be. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day and it will help you to stay awake. If you’re like me and are terrible at remembering to drink water regularly, how about leaving a water bottle or jug on your desk? I recently got myself a CamelBak Eddy water bottle which I take with me everywhere. Before I had my Camelbak, I relied on my kikki.K glass water bottle that lived on my desk (and received a lot of compliments from colleagues).

These are just some of the things you can do to stay energized and awake at work. What do you to keep yourself energized at work? Leave a comment below!

  1. All very good ideas on staying energized. I especially agree with keeping hydrated. I usually drink over a gallon a day of what I honestly believe is the most amazing water in the world and I KNOW it helps me stay energized.
